At Metropolitan Dental Specialty Group, we only use the best restorative materials available today when it comes to dental crowns and other appliances. For this reason, we specialize in porcelain crowns, which provide an incredibly natural appearance, as well as improved durability and longevity. If you have a severely damaged or decayed tooth, a porcelain crown may be the ideal solution!
Reasons for a Porcelain Crown
A dental crown is designed to restore the function and appearance of a problematic tooth. We may recommend a porcelain crown if:
Before the advent of porcelain restorations, most crowns were fabricated using metal alloys or gold. These types of materials are extremely durable and provide unmatched longevity, especially for teeth that experience the strongest forces of your bite. For this reason, these restorative materials are still used today in certain situations.
Composite resin, a tooth-colored putty-like substance, can also be used for dental crowns. While composite may be a cost-effective solution, this material provides inferior durability and aesthetics. We typically recommend porcelain crowns if cosmetics are a concern. Porcelain is much more durable than composite resin and possesses the same light-reflective properties of natural enamel.
Porcelain Crown Procedure
The porcelain crown procedure is usually broken down into two appointments. During your first appointment, your doctor will prepare the tooth. We must completely reshape the enamel to accommodate the shape and size of your final crown. Once the tooth is reshaped, we will take an impression.
This impression of your tooth will be used by our dental laboratory to fabricate your porcelain crown. The fabrication process usually takes a couple weeks to complete. In the meantime, we may provide a temporary restoration to protect the tooth.
Once your porcelain crown is ready, we can schedule your final appointment. During this appointment, your doctor will remove the temporary, check the margins of your final restoration, and permanently bond the crown to your tooth. We want to ensure your new crown does not affect your bite or the surrounding teeth. We may need to make some last-minute adjustments to achieve the perfect fit.
Why Choose a Porcelain Crown?
A porcelain crown not only replicates the appearance of the tooth, but it can also be designed to improve cosmetics, making it look better than before! For this reason, porcelain crowns are ideal for teeth in your visible smile line. Also, advanced techniques and technology have led to porcelain restorations that are durable enough for teeth in the posterior (back) region of your mouth.
