Oral Surgery

Elderly couple hugging and smiling after recieving oral surgery at Metropolitan Dental Specialty Group When people think about surgery, there are many things that quickly come to mind. Perhaps you think of looming hospitals with an operating room, or medical professionals dressed head to toe in surgical scrubs. You would not be half incorrect with that idea! While we do perform oral surgeries in scrubs, we often work inside our clean and sanitary medical office instead of a remote hospital suite.

Oral surgery encompasses a wide variety of procedures, some of which may surprise you. While many people immediately imagine fully sedated patients or a scene out of a televised medical drama, oral surgery is often quite routine and outpatient. We here at Metropolitan Dental Specialty Group perform many different types of oral surgery at our office, giving our patients the highest caliber of care in a safe and sterile environment.

What Types of Oral Surgery Do We Perform Here?

It might surprise you to learn that one of the most common types of oral surgery that we perform here is tooth extractions. While most people do not think of extractions as surgery, they do qualify as a surgical procedure. A tooth may need surgical extraction for a variety of reasons.

Some of these reasons may include a tooth that has not properly erupted or has become impacted (such as a wisdom tooth), a tooth has suffered from severe tooth decay or has been broken or damaged due to trauma or impact. We need to remove the tooth to prepare the mouth for orthodontic treatment (for instance, if there is overcrowding in the patient’s mouth).

Surgery is not exclusively about removing teeth, either! We also perform surgery in our office to add teeth back into a patient’s mouth. This occurs when a patient is determined to be a good candidate for Dental Implants. Implant surgery is another one of the more common types of surgery we provide at our office.

Getting a dental implant allows our patients to have a permanent, attractive, and natural looking restoration for their tooth loss. Placing a dental implant does require that we place an incision into the gums to allow us to insert the dental implant directly into the jawbone. We will also suture the surgical site closed again after the implant surgery, which can all be completed in our office.

We also address problems with TMJ (temporomandibular joint) dysfunction. If we meet a patient who has a jaw that clicks and pops when they open their mouth, and they have ongoing pain when they chew, then they may need surgery to correct this problem. Issues with sleep apnea can also be treated in our office. Sleep apnea occurs when the person who suffers from it stops breathing in their sleep. Signs that someone may have this problem includes snoring at night, waking up feeling poorly rested, and daytime fatigue.
