Should Children with Motor Skill Delays Use Electric Toothbrushes to Help?

Posted on 9/21/2020 by Metropolitan Dental Specialty Group
Should Children with Motor Skill Delays Use Electric Toothbrushes to Help?If you have a child who may be struggling with oral hygiene due to motor skill delays, we have good news for you: electric toothbrushes can be a huge help! Removing plaque, food debris, tartar buildup and keeping bacteria at a minimum is essential to maintaining good oral health and extending the life of your child's teeth. When teeth are brushed incorrectly or ineffectively, the previously mentioned begin to eat away at the enamel of the teeth. This allows cavities and decay to begin to work to destroy your child's beautiful smile.

More Fun, Less Work

The good news is that even if your child has motor skill delays, they can still get their teeth clean with an electric toothbrush. Depending on how your child handles the toothbrush, they may be able to brush alone or with minimal help. This helps not only with your child's oral hygiene and personal development, but also their confidence and self-esteem.

Electric toothbrushes also tend to have wider or chunkier handles which makes them easier to hold and use. If your child has a sensory processing disorder, the wider and chunkier handles may be helpful, but the vibrating toothbrush may be an irritation for them. Whatever your child's needs are, be prepared to try several different styles of electric toothbrushes before you find the one that is perfect for your child.

As with all children, another key ingredient to maintaining good oral health includes regular visits to our office! In our office, we pride ourselves on working with children who may have exceptional needs and circumstances. Call us today and let us know what your situation is and we will be happy to accommodate you and your child in any way that we can.
